How Do Raid Battles Work?

I know some of you are still confused on how this new feature works. A detailed explanation on the support website of Niantic shows us what awaits us in Raid Battles. Trust me, it's going to be one of the best updates of Pokémon GO since the release of Generation II.

What are Raid Battles?

"Raid Battles occur when a Boss Pokémon takes over a Gym. Your goal is to defeat this powerful Pokémon. If you and your fellow Trainers are successful, you’ll be rewarded with special items and a chance at catching that Pokémon. You cannot do it alone; you’ll need help from fellow Trainers to raid the Gym (and hopefully) prevail."

If you play RPG games, Raid Battles are like Boss Battles. Boss Pokémon are way more powerful than the most powerful Pokémon obtainable in the game, and you'll be needing the help of others to defeat such a Pokémon. Defeating the Boss Pokémon earns you rewards, like items and even a chance to catch the Boss Pokémon itself.

How can I find a Raid Battle?

You can find a Raid Battle on the nearby feature. You can see Raid Battles that haven't started, which you can see as an Egg, and ongoing Raid Battles. You can also see the difficulty of the Raid Battles below, ranging from 1 to 5 icons, with 5 icons being the most difficult. Once a Raid Battle starts, you only have 1 hour to defeat the Boss.

How do I join a Raid Battle?

You will need a Raid Pass to join the Raid Battle. A free Raid Pass is given to you when you spin the Photo Disc in the gym, but you can only get one free Raid Pass per day, and you can only hold one Raid Pass at a time. You can also buy Raid Pass in the in-game store.

Any number of players can join the raid, but only in groups of up to 20 players. If you join, you'll be automatically matched with other players, but if you want to raid with your group of friends, you can opt to make a Private Raid. In a Private Raid, players are asked a participant code to enter.

What happens during a Raid Battle?

The commands in a Raid Battle is the same as a regular gym Battle. You tap to attack, hold a tap to use your charge attack, and swipe to dodge. You can flee a Raid Battle as many times as you want and you won't need another Raid Pass to re-enter. Your Raid Pass is good for the rest of the Raid Battle. You can heal your Pokémon using Potions while you have fled and you can always re-join the Raid Battle when you are ready to battle again.

What happens when we defeat the Boss?

You and your fellow players get rewards which may include Golden Razz Berries, TMs, and Rare Candies. You also have a chance of catching the Boss Pokémon, depending on how many Premier Balls you got. The Premier Balls you receive is determined by the how much progress you did in the Raid, according to the support article. "Progress" may refer to the overall damage you've done to the Boss Pokémon. The Boss Pokémon will flee if you run out of Premier Balls. You can not use other Balls like Great and Ultra Balls, but you can use Berries.

What happens to the Gym after we defeat the Boss?

You won't be able to interact with the Gym until the raid has been finished. After the Raid Battle has been finished, the Pokémon inside the gym before the raid started returns. Overall, the gym returns to its original state.

Why should I join Raid Battles in the first place?

First, TMs. TMs can change the current Quick or Charge move your Pokémon has. This is great for the Pokémon you have that has bad moves yet good IVs. Pokémon like Snorlax and Lapras are the most common victims of this. You can only get this item on Raid Battles.

Second, Rare Candies. Rare Candies will change into regular candies when you select the Pokémon you want it to change to. If you need Snorlax Candies, Rare Candies are the answer. Don't get much Larvitar? Again, Rare Candies are the answer, and much like TMs, you can only get this item on Raid Battles.

Third, you can catch the Boss Pokémon. Boss Pokémon can be as weak as Magikarp or as strong as Tyranitar. Any chance to get an easy evolution is a chance worth taking.

Finally, Golden Razz Berry. It adds a greater chance to catch a Pokémon compared to Razz Berry, and it fills up the Motivation Meter completely. Also, like TMs and Rare Candies, you can only get this item on Raid Battles.
