[UPDATE] Legendary Birds Release Schedule - How to defeat the Legendary Bird Trio

If you're like me, you're now enjoying the release of Legendary Pokémon. You know how hard it is to catch one, Lugia needing 14 people to even safely say you'll get a chance to get one. If you are saying that this is the most fun you've ever had this week, hold that thought, because you'll be a lot more ecstatic when you learn how Niantic plans on releasing these birds.

July 22 saw the release of Articuno, and you'll have the chance to catch one from now until July 31, so mark your calendars. Articuno is one of the best Ice type attackers you have in this metagame, and she'll probably be on the top tier of Ice types until Gen IV arrives. She has a pure Ice-type moveset, so it's a matter of your preference regarding her Charge moves. She is very weak to Rock types, while sporting weaknesses to Steel, Fire, and Electric as well. Tyranitar with Iron Tail Stone Edge is the best Pokémon to use against Articuno. Opt more for Fire-types and Rock-types that don't have a weakness to Ice-types, like the Legacy-moved Omastar with Rock Throw Rock Slide. Most Rock-types are also Ground types so avoid using them unless you don't have better options. Fire-types resist Ice-types so use them over Rock/Ground-types. You can beat her with 10 mid to high level players.

When Articuno withers, Moltres will be born from the ashes. From July 31 until August 7, you'll have the chance to get this flaming phoenix. There is already a lot of good Fire-type attackers, and there'll be better ones in the next Generations. I say you catch this one more of as a trophy rather than a legitimate attacker. You can still opt to use it, and she will not fail you as a Fire-type attacker. Again, Rock-types are king here, having double weakness to it. You can also use Water and Electric-type. Go for Golem with Rock Throw and Stone Edge for it is her best counter. Tyranitar with Bite and Stone Edge, Omastar with Rock Throw or Water Gun and Rock Slide or Hydro Pump is also great. This is the time where a combination of Water, Rock, and Ground typing is great, having double resistance to Fire-types, so use those types of attackers first before going to Electric-types.

Once Moltres is gone, Zapdos will come charging from August 7 up until August 14. This is the better of the Legendary trio, arguably the best. Once you have this, drop your Jolteons, this bird is the best Electric type attacker, and will be until Raikou or Gen IV comes. She is also harder to defeat, having no double weaknesses unlike the two earlier birds. She still is weak to Rock and Ice types. Consider using Rock and Ice-types with a secondary Ground typing. Golem with Rock Throw and Stone Edge is easily her best counter. You can also use Tyranitar with Bite and Stone Edge. Avoid using Ice-types with Water typing like Lapras, Cloyster, and Dewgong. The same goes with Omastar and Kabutops regarding Rock-types. Piloswine is a great counter, and so are Sudowoodo and Rhydon with Mud Slap and Stone Edge.

While there's no word on when Lugia will end, it's likely that she'll disappear along-side Articuno, but there's also a chance she'll stay up until Moltres. Lugia is one of the more reliable Psychic-types sporting a good bulk and respectable attack. Beating it is tricky though. It's weak against Ghost, Dark, Electric, Rock, and Ice. When it has Hydro Pump, stay away from Rock-types and opt for either Water-types with a move she is weak to, like Bite Gyarados, Electric-types, like Jolteon and Magneton, or Water/Ice Pokémon like Lapras and Cloyster. If it has Future Sight, Dark-types are your best friend. If it has Sky Attack, use anyting she is weak to. Tyranitar is great on sets without Hydro Pump, being able to resist both Future Sight and Sky Attack with the bonus of resisting Extrasensory. Meanwhile, Lapras is great on the Hydro Pump set, so having both Tyranitar and Lapras are great. Golem and Jolteon are reliable checks as well. You need at least 14 high level players to beat this beast.

A more in-depth coverage regarding Legendary Pokémon will be covered soon as more of a feature piece rather than a guide or news post. Enjoy these raids while they last. For more information regarding this news, and what happened in GO Fest in Chicago, click here.
