What are the Legendary Pokémon?

People have heard stories of creatures that change weather, harness the power of nature, or even being the single ancestor of all Pokémon. Most people would say such creatures are stuff of myths and legends, but you know very well what happened last week, July 22. A creature thought by many as mere fantasy have appeared, and many more are coming soon. Let's meet some of them, notably, the Legendary Pokémon of Kanto and Johto.

Legendary Birds - Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres

You know them from the team logos, and you've already seen one of them roaming around the world. Also known as the "winged mirages", they live on the outskirts of the Kanto Region. Articuno, the legendary bird of Ice, lives within the depths of Seafoam Islands. Powerful tides may hinder you from approaching her, all the while, powerful Water and Ice-type Pokémon roam about. Zapdos, the legendary bird of Lightning, dwell in the abandoned Power Plant, near the Rock Tunnel, among wild Electric types attracted by the remnants of a once active Power Plant powering all of Kanto. Moltres, the legendary bird of Fire, once reside deep within Victory Road, where only the most powerful trainers can even hope to pass this place. She then perched on top of Mt. Ember, in One Island, part of the famous Sevii Islands. Recent reports state that she is now on top of Mt. Silver, open only to those who have proven themselves worthy in battle. There are also reports of sightings of these legendary birds outside Kanto, most notably in Sinnoh and Kalos. These birds are governed by the one known as Lugia, which we'll tackle more later in this article.

These three birds, along with Lugia, will be seen throught the world within the next few days. More info on this can be read here.

Mew and Mewtwo

In a faraway island, some claimed is on Guyana, South America, scientists discovered a new Pokémon, which the named Mew. Within it, the DNA of all exisiting Pokémon can be seen. It is speculated to be the ancestor of all Pokémon. Seeing Mew as a potentially powerful Pokémon, scientists tried to clone Mew, calling the clone Mewtwo. This clone is far too powerful and has vicious tendencies, and it escaped from them, deciding to dwell on the Cerulean Cave. Because of this, the Pokémon League decided to close this cave to the public. Only the most powerful trainers can hope to face such a powerful foe.

Both are pure Psychic-types, so a Bug, Ghost, and Dark are effective against them, the last one being immune to their Psychic attacks as well, but beware of Focus Blast. Bug-types be wary of Mew's Fire Blast, while Ghost-types should avoid Mewtwo's Shadow Ball

Legendary Beasts - Raikou, Entei, Suicune

Three nameless beasts lived in the Brass Tower, when suddenly, lightning struck the tower, burning the building with the beasts inside. After the flames have already burned the whole structure, rain has poured and wind has blown, putting the fire out. These three beasts were then revived by Ho-oh, becoming the Legendary Beasts. It is said that they represent the three events that happened in the tower itself, lightning that struck the tower, fire that burned the tower, and the rain and wind that put that fire out. These beast's revival are seen by people as unnatural, so they are met with the violence of the city's residents. They fled the city, roaming throughout the region, having lost their trust in humanity. Some even see sighting of them as far as the Kanto Region.

Raikou, being the Legendary Beast of Lightning, is susceptible to Ground-types, while facing Entei, the Legendary Beast of Fire, might need you to bring out your Water, Rock, and Ground attackers as well. Lastly, Suicune, the Legendary Beast of Water, is weak against Grass and Electric attacks.

Tower Duo - Lugia and Ho-oh

Lugia and Ho-oh lived on different towers at one point; Lugia lived on top of the Brass Tower, while Ho-oh lived on top of the Bell Tower. After the fire in the Brass Tower, Lugia fled the tower to live deep within the Whirl Islands. While Ho-oh is seen as the master of the Legendary Beasts, Lugia is seen as the master of the Legendary Birds. You can only meet Ho-oh when you have obtained the Rainbow Wing or Clear Bell, while you can only meet Lugia when you have obtained the Silver Wing or Tidal Bell. Ho-oh is seen as a sign of hope, a sign of future happiness, when seen flying through the skies. Lugia is seen as the creator of whirlpools and storms, and is said to live deep inside the sea because of it's power is too much to handle.

Ho-oh, much like Moltres, is a Fire and Flying Pokémon, so same weaknesses apply. Rock-types are the best and Water is a good counter, but Ho-oh's Solarbeam might hurt them. Electric-types are also good.

Celebi

The Voice of the Forest and the Guardian of the Ilex Forest, these are what people say to describe Celebi. Known to have the power to time-travel, Celebi also has the ability to flourish the plant and trees around her. People say that so long as Celebi is around, a bright future is ahead of us. The GS Ball, an old Pokéball covered in gold, has the power to summon such a mythical Pokémon.

Because it is a Grass and Psychic type, a good Bug-type attack might be your best option. You can also opt for Fire-type attackers. Poison-types are good but they are weak to Psychic. Most Ghost types are also Poison types so you may want to opt out. Flying-types are fine but might go down on Charge Beam, Dark-types are great but Dazzling Gleam will tear them away.

Beyond Kanto and Johto

There are plenty more of Legendaries to be found. These are but a handful of countless Legendary Pokémon seen in the game. Hopefully, we get to see them all in Pokémon GO.
