Things Pokémon GO Got Right: The Battle System

If you have played the original main series games, you would know that in most games, you need to collect all 8 Pokémon Gym badges to challenge the Pokémon League and be the Pokémon Master you are destined to be. While some players may say that Pokémon GO did not do a great job in translating the battle aspect of the main series. Just tapping and swiping is not that... awesome. I might have the unpopular opinion. In fact, I say the Tap-Based Battle System is one of the things Niantic got right.
Some of you may disagree, but please hear me out. Most of you that disagree may think that Niantic should've done a turn-based battle like the main series games or made weaknesses or resistances more prominent, more "effective". Here's the thing you haven't considered: This is not the main series games. Sure, it's Pokémon, but you have to consider that it's also a mobile game, an on-the-go mobile game. Turn-based games are slow-paced which are not suited for mobile games, which are more in tune with real-time strategy, like Clash of Clans, Mobile Legends or Vainglory.

In a realistic standpoint, turn-based fighting is not good if you want a game that wants to make you feel that Pokémon are in the real world. In the real world, you don't wait for your opponent to make a move. You capitalize on every idle moment, unless waiting is strategically a better move. You don't see Ash waiting for the opponent to hit Pikachu. You see him commanding his Pokémon to dodge attacks or use another move to counter the opponent's move.

Don't get me wrong, this game's Battle system is not perfect. I actually think having only two moves and not having status moves or secondary effects are a big mistake, but at least the battle system is more akin to a real-life battle than a turn-based system. At least it makes you dodge as soon as you see a move being performed, giving you a chance to dodge.

You still disagree? If you've seen the film 'The Patriots', there is a scene where there is a war that both sides are doing volley fire, in which soldiers shoot in turns. If you haven't seen it, you can see a YouTube clip below of the scene I'm talking about and tell me if this type of battle is better.

Of course if every tap does damage, Niantic will need to make the amount of damage lower. One thing they did is lowered the effectiveness of weakness and resistances. Some people are turned off by this and want Niantic to apply the same multiplier as the main series games, 2x for super effective and 4x for double super effective. There was a time that I actually agreed with this, but now, I realized one thing I should've realized before: This is not the main series games.

In the main series games, you can OHKO Pokémon, mostly because of these weakness multipliers. That said, if you give Pokémon the ability to OHKO Pokémon like the main series games, it will break the Gym metagame. Gyms will be too easy to bring down, and will result to high rates of gym turnover. High turnover will essentially make people think that maintaining Pokémon in gyms is a lost cause. Why would you put Pokémon on gyms when within an hour, maybe even within 10 mins, your gym will be brought down easily. It doesn't really make the game fun. It makes it daunting.
